Welcome

Welcome to the new GUM Club forums! There are now three forums available on the website. Announcements will contain notices about official club event and only committee members can post on this forum. Chat is for any member to discuss anything at all (find a climbing partner, announce a party, sell gear, etc). Committee is only visible to committee members and is for information about running the club.

Our forums are our mailing list and vice-versa. If you post something on the website those people who opted to receive e-mails will also get that post as an e-mail. If you send an e-mail to the mailing list that message will also appear on the website. For more information on posting and replying see the appropriate section below.

Registering

Note: You need to separately join each of the groups to be able to post or receive e-mail updates.

To get the best possible experience from the forums you need to pay attention to the options when you register. If you only want to read messages on the website you don't need to join at all! If you want e-mail updates or want to post in Chat you must register.

I Don't Have a Google Account

You will need to make one to post on the forums. Click the "Sign in to post" link near the top of the page.


From there click "Sign up for a new Google Account" in the upper right-hand corner.


You can use your existing e-mail address (even your Uni address) by choosing the correct option in the right-hand column. For your Uni address "Use a different email" is the correct choice.


Fill in your details on the next page and you're set! You will use this e-mail and password to register for an sign into our fourms.

I Already Have a Google Account

Click the "Sign in to post" link and enter your Google account details. If you see "Join group to post" instead you're already signed into your Google account! Skip to the next step.

Register for Each Forum

Remember that you must separately join each forum you want to post to or receive e-mail updates from.

To join click the "Join group to post" link.


Then pay attention to the following screen; it determines how many e-mails you will receive from the group. If you choose "No Email" you will need to check for new forum posts by visiting the GUMClub website. The "Abridged Email" option will send you a daily e-mail with all of the posts made that day. The "Digest Email" tries to group multiple messages into a single e-mail. Finally, the "Email" option sends you an e-mail every time someone posts to the forum. This makes the forum work like a traditional mailing list.

Preferences

If you ever want to change your preferences or unsubscribe go to http://groups.google.com and login to your Google account. You can also unsubscribe by following the directions in the footer of every e-mail sent by the group.

Posting and Replying

Posting and Replying on the Website

To create a new thread simply click the "New Topic" button. Ordinary members will only be able to do this in the Chat section. To reply to a message in Chat click the "Reply" button to send the reply to everyone or choose "Reply to author" after clicking the small arrow next to Reply to send an e-mail to the author. You cannot reply to Announcements from the website. If you get e-mails for Announcements you can reply to the e-mail or you can find the author's contact information on the Committee page.

Posting and Replying by E-mail

If you send an e-mail to gumclub-announcements@googlegroups.com or gumclub-chat@googlegroups.com it will be sent to the Announcements or Chat mailing list / forum. If you reply to an e-mail from Announcements ([gumclub] is in the subject) you are replying to the author of that message. If you reply to an e-mail from Chat ([gumclub-chat] in the subject) that message goes out to the entire group just like an ordinary mailing list / forum.

Committee Members

You need to let the web person know you have registered on Announcements so they can give you permission to post.

Known Issues

Some versions of Apple's Safari browser will fail to load the forums and the page will be left blank. To fix this choose Safari -> Reset Safari from the main menu. We're not the only ones with this problem...

If you encounter any other problems please let the web person on the Committee know.

Profile Picture

To add a profile picture to your account you need to check the "Link to my Google profile" option above. If you follow the "Google profile" link you will get a page that lets you set your name and photo.

Unsubscribe

There a several ways to do this.
  1. If you want to stop receiving e-mails but still be able to post on the website use the "My membership" link at the top of each forum page. You must be signed in to see this link.
  2. You can go to http://groups.google.com and choose "Manage my memberships" to remove yourself from a group.
  3. You can send an e-mail from the address you don't want to receive mail from. The remove addresses are listed below. It doesn't matter what the contents of the e-mail are.

  4. Find the Internets Person on the Committee Page and ask them (nicely) for help.
